Brief reviews on Good Reads.

What I'm Listening to and What I'm reading...

Summer means road trips, right?  ESPECIALLY for those of us who live in the SWELTERING DESERT where temps are 110 degrees even at 10:00 at night.  {It's true!} I don't know about you...but I like to have LOTS to read in the car and LOTS of FUN tunes to listen to on MY road trips.  {Sadly, the kids' and I's FUN tunes do not = Joe's FUN tunes...good thing he has a set of ear phones and an iphone, right? *Smile*}

Here's the latest COOMBS FAMILY SUMMER MIX that I've made:

Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It) - Beyonce {per London's request, of course!}
Just Can't Get Enough - The Black Eyed Peas
E.T. (feat. Kanye West) - Katy Perry
Party Rock Anthem (feat. Lauren Bennett & GoonRock) -LMFAO
Dynamite -Taio Cruz
Black and Yellow- Wiz Khalifa
Stereo Hearts (feat. Adam Levine) -Gym Class Heroes
Let's Get It Started-The Black Eyed Peas
Give Me Everything (feat. Ne-Yo, Afrojack & Nayer) - Pitbull
Who Says - Selena Gomez & The Scene
Where Is The Love -The Black Eyed Peas
Maneater -Nelly Furtado
Sexy Chick (feat. Akon)  - David Guetta

The boys have already held 2 dance parties with the neighborhood kids in my craft room and rocked out to each and every song! So funny to watch.

As for my reading materials...here's what I've picked up at the library:

Finally!  This has been on my 'to-read' list for forever now.  I figured since the movie was coming out soon...it was mandatory reading material.

Jack Ballentine became a Phoenix police officer in 1978 and quickly rose to the top as one of the world’s most successful undercover operatives. His specialty: posing as an undercover hit man. None of the people who hired him had any inkling that he was actually a cop, and his work led to a perfect rate of twenty-four convictions out of twenty-four indictments on murder conspiracy charges.

I love an easy read.  I'm just afraid this book will be too easily comparable to London and I. {Wink!}

I love me some True Crime reading. And I vividly remember following this story in the news a few years back.

So now the question is...What are YOU reading and listening to???

Kate's Ice-Cream Parlor.

Today....my cute little niece celebrated her 4th birthday.

It was ALL things ice-cream and my sister {as usual} went all out.  Care to see the details?  They are pretty amazing.

Isn't this banner darling?  I want to throw MYSELF an ice-cream party just so I have an excuse to hang it in my own house.  Stephanie made it with scrapbook paper and die-cuts.

These were the invite's handed out.  The actual cone part had BUBBLE GUMBALLS inside of it!  How fun is that?!

Games included:

Sweet Shoppe BINGO!  Bingo markers were M&Ms of course!

Pin the Cherry on the Ice-Cream cone.  And also...musical chairs....with songs like "I Want Candy" and "Lollipop, Lollipop".  {Have I mentioned my sister is 'detail-oriented'?}

The treats were equally as amazing......

Scoops of 4 different types of ice-cream...

...to go in your choice of a cone or cup {darling cone covers and ice-cream cups purchased at Michaels in their $ bins.  Love that!}

Six different toppings...plus chocolate, caramel and whip cream!

To-die-for chocolate cupcakes with cream cheese frosting.

 Cupcakes in a cone. {These were my absolute FAVORITE growing up!}

And homemade chocolate chip cookie ICE-CREAM sandwiches.  They were divine!

Then there were favors:

Cute little ice-cream cups from Michaels {$ bins again!} filled with ice-cream bubbles, candy flavored chapstick, bubble gum and ice-cream themed note pads.

Great job Stephanie!

P.S. Have I mentioned that London is obsessed with Grandma?  Anytime another grandkid even THINKS about sitting on her lap....it's an all out war.  And London usually wins.

NOTD: OPI's Marquis d'Mauve

Photobucket

I bought this polish when I was banning myself from purchasing unnecessary items; e.g telling myself that I do not need ten near identical shades of pink etc. Marquis d'Mauve is a colour that seems unique to OPI and I haven't found a dupe for it anywhere. It's a beautiful rose-bronze-gold mix, which in the bottle sort of looks like a MAC mineralize skinfinish. So pretty.

Lush Haul

Photobucket

Here are my recent Lush purchases that I've bought recently. Some are repurchases of old favourites and some are products that I've wanted to try out:-

The Olive Branch shower gel – The very first time I tried this, I wasn’t that keen on the scent as it reminds me of a lot of stereotypical ‘male’ shower gels, but it’s really grown on me and I use it as a refreshing change ever now and again.

Happy Hippy shower gel – Probably my all time favourite showe gel from Lush that I can purchase all year round. It smells like a citrusy fruit cocktail and it’s also great doubled up as a shampoo. Perfect for travelling around with.

Sugar Scrub – I’ve tried the other scrub (the white one called Sugar Babe) and this green one has a wonderful herbal type of scent but is much rougher, so do use with care. I smush these into a pot, add some water and make it into a scrubby paste and find them very effective.

Soft Coeur massage bar – I use the massage bars as solid perfumes and sometimes as a solid body moisturiser. This one has a lovely scent (very sweet but not too sickly), but what’s with that piece of chocolate inside it?! It’s great until it melts and hits the chocolate part, just gets too messy thereafter.

Stepping Stone foot scrub – Smells amazing, quite zingy, but I didn’t think much of its actual use. It was much too soft and crumbled very easily. I turned this into a paste again using the method above and got two uses out of it. I don’t think I’d repurchase this. Probably better if I used the Sugar Scrub on my feet instead.

Buffy bar – I can’t really agree with its claims on slaying cellulite because I don’t think anything ever changes the appearance of mine, but I absolutely love this product as a solid moisturizer that also exfoliates. I use it in the shower (turning the water off, layering this on and then rinsing it off) and it makes my skin unbelievably soft. Buffy is also one of my essentials during winter because it means I don’t have to apply cold moisturiser after a nice hot shower!

Oatifix fresh face mask – Using Lush’s recycling pots offer, I got this for free. My skin is usually typically combination but gets more oily during the summer, so this product wasn’t meant for me as it’s best for dry skins. However, as it was the only face mask left in the store, I decided to get it anyway and that yummy scent of cookie dough was just too tempting to pass by. It made my skin super soft and was a nice exfoliator too. I was a little apprehensive that it might break me out, but I didn’t have any problems and got around ten applications from this pot. It is the messiest face mask I have tried from Lush though, was a bit tricky to apply as it doesn’t stick all that well to the skin so requires a bit of patience!

Watermelon Lemonade.

As much as my family LOVES watermelon...we ALWAYS seem to have some left over each time I cut it up.  Allison at Oopsey Daisy has solved this problem for me though with her SUPER YUMMY recipe for Watermelon Lemonade.  I cannot wait to try it this week with my new handy dandy blender!  Click HERE for instructions.

More Fabulous 4th Fun Finds.

Try saying that 10 times in a row!  I don't know about you but I am SUPER excited to celebrate the 4th of July this year! I keep finding darling ideas around the blog-o-sphere with ways to add a festive touch to your celebrations.  Like this one from the blog It is What it Is.

How fun would these be to hand out as favors?  This cute blog GIVES you the printables FREE for you to print out on your own.  LOVE that!  And the possibilities with what you could fill these baggies up with are endless.  I'm thinking....hot tamales. Click HERE to see more.

And how 'bout a cute little way to serve drinks:

The blog Two Shades of Pink gives you the step by step tutorial on making these 'Mason Jar Sippy Cups'.  All thats needed {besides the jars} is scrapbook paper!  Click
HERE to see for yourself.

And while we're on the subject of jars:

Aren't these Jell-O snacks served in baby food jars darling?  Found over at Green Acres Hobby Farm HERE...she shows you the step by step process in making these.  HOW FUN!

Random Wednesday.

* London has been giving THIS song a big thumbs up lately.  So much so that when she first hears it on the radio...her eyeballs bulge out of her eye-sockets.  That's how much she loves it.  It might just be our summer anthem because the boys love it equally as much.  I {liked} it.  Until last night when I was trying to go to bed and it kept ringing through my head.  Now?  Not so much.  {Note to self:  stop watching TV and listening to the radio right before bed}.

* I really wish Jimmy Fallon was on BEFORE Jay Leno.  He is so...much...funnier!  Leno has lost his mo-jo.  Jimmy's 'thank you notes' kill me!  And I love The Roots.

* I really really really hate it when you invest a good 2 hours into a Dateline episode...only to find out that THE CASE HAS NOT BEEN SOLVED.  What gives?  Why would they even do this to us?  If it's to notify the public of a suspect or gain information.....then that's what America's Most Wanter is for! I LOVE Dateline.  But what I love MOST about it...is seeing the scum-bag in the end get prosecuted and thrown into jail.

* Speaking of TV {yes...I watch a lot} have you seen the show 'Freaky Eaters'?  It's disturbing. Don't get me wrong...I get on my {kicks} of obsessions with certain favorite foods.  Otis Spunktemyer cookies.  Mint Chocolate Chip Ice-cream from Water and Ice.  Cracklin Oat Bran cereal.  But come on!  I get over it in about a week.  These people are literally OBSESSED. It's nasty.

*And speaking of nasty {and TV of course} have you seen the show 'Hoarders'.  Another disturbing show that I can't seem to get enough of. Although lats night....I HAD TO TURN IT OFF.  It was an episode with a guy who hoarded RATS!!!!  I couldn't stomach it.  They were everywhere.  They even nested in his MATTRESS!

* Why are fireworks even allowed in the state of AZ?  I mean sparklers...yes, I can understand.  But anything else should be banned.  Have we not all been watching the raging wildfires burning through out our state so far this summer?  I think we, as a state, can go without our pyrotechnics for just ONE year.  Agreed?

* THIS seems to be my new favorite song lately.  Love this singer.

* My kids eat chicken nuggets and french fries AT LEAST one meal a day.  Everyday.  Sue me.

* It's that time of the year again where I count 'swimming in the pool' as a 'bath' or 'shower' for my kids.  Come on...in my defense...it's chlorinated!  Germs are killed .

*And now for my random thoughts on NBC's THE VOICE:

  -  Javier is my HANDS DOWN favorite.  His rendition of THIS song last night was AH-mazing.

  - Cee-Lo speaks mumble jumble.

  - I am pleasantly surprised at just how much I enjoy Blake Shelton.  He is so funny and somewhat charming, no?

  - Yes, my crush is still in effect for Adam Levine.

- And yes.  This is still my favorite new show.

Father's Day Coombs Style.

Joe told me he wanted a FATHERS DAY WEEK this year.  {He's caught on to the fact that I really like to drag Mother's Day out for as long as possible.  He's really just following in my footsteps}. I said 'your wish is my command' {well...something along those lines} and his week included seeing the movie Super 8 not once but TWICE and also going to not one by TWO Diamondback games.  I'd say he was pretty lucky. I'd say I'm pretty lucky to have him as my hubby.

The kids insisted on decorating him a cake.

 Doesn't it look appetizing?

He got his very own refillable Thirstbuster.  {This will save us thousands this summer on our road trips!}

The kids made Joe lots of cards and pictures.  My favorite thing about Carson's art work is the fact that Joe and Carson's legs come right out of their heads.  Priceless!

We had dinner with Grandpa Scott and the Coombs Clan.  So grateful for such a GREAT father-in-law!

And we ended the night off with sparklers in Grandma and Grandpa's backyard.  Does it get any better than that?  I think not.

Tomorrow we continue the celebrations with my family...

Which will include dinner OUT with no kids.

I sure love holidays.  And the men in my life.

1. Dogtooth (2009) - Bizarre Greek film. Two parents shelter their three teenage children from the outside world through their own version of home schooling where an 'elephant' may be the name for a cup etc and planes fall from the sky in toy form. Very strange.
2. Jesus' Son (2000) - This is currently streaming for free on LoveFilm and I know a lot of people seem to rate it, but I found it quite dull. There are much better junkie/lifestyle films out there.
3. The Lake House (2006) - Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock star in this love story that also features a time travelling mailbox. It is better than it sounds.
4. Marie Antoinette (2006) - I have lost count of how many times I've seen this, one of my favourites. So beautifully shot, decadent and youthful.
5. Percy Jackson and The Lightning Thief (2010) - This was OK, you might like it if you like the Harry Potter franchise.

6. Remember Me (2010) - R-Patz and Claire from Lost fall in love despite their family troubles, the ending is a real tearjerker.
7. Secretary (2003) - 'Sexy black comedy' with a very mild S&M theme - honestly I know that this may have shocked people a couple of years ago, but my open mind found this very tame with its subject matter. I didn't see what all the fuss was about.
8. Sex and the City 2 (2010) - I loved the first movie, but found this sequel incredibly cringeworthy!
9. Taken (2009) - I found this Liam Neeson thriller to be very annoying on so many levels. I kind of interpreted it early on as one of those irritating 'America is such a lovely safe place and everywhere else is bad' type of films. The bad place in this, where Neeson's characters' daughter is kidnapped, drugged up and sold as a high end sex slave, being Paris. I've no doubt that sex trafficking does happen in Paris, but there were certainly some political undertones going on here.
10. Youth In Revolt (2010) - This could have been so much better, it was just mostly boring with a tiny handful of laughs in it.
